Endwar Sequel Now on Hold

Sequel to voice-activated RTS on the backburner.

By Kat Bailey, 02/08/2010

Looks like we won't be getting a sequel to EndWar after all, at least not for a while. Videogaming247 is reporting that the project is currently on hold.

"It's on the backburner," Ubisoft Shanghai's Michael de Plater said. He didn't go into any further detail.

The original game was released in 2008 to mediocre reviews. The main hook was its voice activation, but it was panned for its fairly shallow gameplay.

A sequel was confirmed in July, with de Plater saying that they've solved some of the "hardest problems." But now it looks doubtful that it will ever be finished.

Ubisoft Shanghai's current project is the first-person survival game I Am Alive, which takes place in a Chicago that has been destroyed by a major earthquake. The release date for that game is currently unknown.

Anybody who has played Endwar knows that the game was more then just a simple skirmish mode.  There was a cause, a purpose to login in every day and help your faction achieve victory.  Going 1v1, 2v2, or eventually 4v4 up until 3:30am EST(cease fire) trying to eke out just another win.  Going for it all, sometimes having your faction win by just 1 match.  Ahh good times. It was war 2, a war that lasted about 80-90 days(yes 3 months), with the JSF(america) coming back from almost being beat to win it all.  Tell me a game that you gave a damn about daily instead of the mindless multiplayer that is common nowadays.   A community that thrived through organization and teaching newbies the ropes.  Trust me, this game was more then the gameplay.  The Theater of War made this game special.  ***side note there were bugs in the TOW that made us all go WTF, but they were fixed eventually.

The voice commands were excellent in use.  Alot of games nowadays could use the kind of voice commands that Endwar used.  Very useful and quick.

Gameplay wise, I dont understand the "meh" about it.  It wasnt the best, but it sure wasnt bad.  It just had a long steep learning curve from my experiences.

Endwar had great concepts but some of the shittiest gameplay I have ever experienced in an RTS. Leave RTS to the pc and stop porting them. please...

Sounds cool. And just think how much cheaper the game is to make with that small title change. The entire time I watched I Am Legend I just wanted it to be a game that I could play.

Anyway, like Assassin's Driver indir Creed II, I hoped logo tigerthat they could build on the solid foundation that Endwar brought.  IMO, I thought the game was deeper the people gave it credit for (it got punched in the mouth for granting the leveling of your units between missions instead of during missions, like traditional RTSs).  But the voice commanding kadinsagligi ses bariyeri  was great, and it didn't get enough credit.  What the game needed was...more.  Higher perspective camera, bigger battlefield, and more units to control.

  • Way Underrated

It's the favorite pastime of socially stunted forum trash to make short comments about games they never played, which is why you see EndWar torn down so much. Anyone who actually played it (the game, not the first five minutes of the admittedly poor demo) knows that it had something special. Virtually every RTS for the last 8 years has been a Warcraft 3 clone and it was refreshing to experience an actual new game supported by new tech that worked so well.

Like Odium says, the game needs more. More scale variety in engagement size, more units like the Artillery and Infantry that don't adhere strictly to the R/P/S gameplay, and more (that is, any) story. It didn't need a ridiculous angsty Japanese plot but damn, even for a Tom Clancy game, that thing was sparse.

I can't play other RTS games anymore without (almost) catching myself issuing orders out loud. "Unit 4, Engage Hostile 3. Airstrike, Target: Bravo" makes for a much better gaming experience than trying to fumble around with a cursor, particularly on consoles. Ubi had something there, it just needs a little polish.

Chalk this up to "Unnecessary Sequels to Games that Don't Need Sequels." *sigh* This kind of news is really depressing. One can only hope this turns in to an indefinite "hold."

EndWar wasnt horrible. It was just, plain. If you ask me EndWar was more of a tech demo than an actual game since the gameplay was kind of bland but the voice activation was well done and innovative. If they can just manage to use voice activation with the gameplay of say a CnC or Starcraft esque game then theyll have something kick ass.

  • It wasn't 'horrible'...geez

I know you said "horrible at worst", but it was nowhere near horrible.

Anyway, like Assassin's Creed II, I hoped that they could build on the solid foundation that Endwar brought.  IMO, I thought the game was deeper the people gave it credit for (it got punched in the mouth for granting the leveling of your units between missions instead of during missions, like traditional RTSs).  But the voice commanding was great, and it didn't get enough credit.  What the game needed was...more.  Higher perspective camera, bigger battlefield, and more units to control.

As for the score, many sites gave it an 8.0.  Only this site gave it "mediocre" scores.  Not only that, but I encourage you to read the user comments under the review here at 1up and see what users thought...they liked it.

    ...so did I.

Which has the potential to be an industry-changing title. Endwar was meh at best, horrible at worst.
