Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Demo Impression

I'm about to speak words of blasphemy. Words that would make any twelve year old with a predator missle ready to strike shudder. I am bored with Call of Duty. Yes, that's it. It's been said. I haven't even prestiged yet and I already feel like I need a break.

While Call of Duty is certainly fun, especially with a bunch of friends, I've started to feel like I need a change or at least a break before this relationship turns sour and we have to end it for good. So, what do I do? I go out and find a demo that involves more guns and I had fun.

BazookaSamurai was actually the first person to tell me the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 demo was out, so I decided I'd try it with him. After we both downloaded the demo we started it up expecting to be exceptionally bamf due to our Call of Duty experience. As with Resident Evil, we were so not prepared for the horror. D:

The Game

Upon starting up the demo, you are presented with the option to play now (or with friends.) Upon clicking that, you are very quickly added into a squad for what seems to be the only game mode available for the demo. Its pretty much demolition in Call of Duty. You are required to (if attacking) set charges at the M-Com stations A and B and prevent enemy targets from disarming the charges. If defending, you are trying to defend these two targets from enemies putting the charges on them in the first place.

The first interesting thing I noticed when you start up the game is that you have the choice between four different classes. Assault, Engineer, Recon, and Medic. Each class has its strengths and weaknesses, but they all have key parts in the scheme of things. Medics are especially cool as they can drop health packs for other team members, and can also revive fallen comrades.

After choosing a class, you can either spawn at the predesignated location, or choose a party member to spawn next to. This feature was actually really useful and could be used to spawn in tactical locations that put you near the action but out of harms way.

But, back to the game. It's scary. Really scary. D: Upon spawning for the first time, I was very much reminded that this is NOT Call of Duty. Bullets flew left and right, explosions could be heard from every side, a tank drove by to my left, planes flew overhead raining death from above, and a guy on a quad sped off into the distance. So much was happening at once, and at first, I felt kind of overwhelmed.

The only thing I knew was that I had to plant charges at A and B and so I started running across the snowy landscape in an attempt to make it to A. Needless to say, I didn't make it far. My first in game death was from a tank. :'<

It took a few deaths before I got the hang of things. Learning to not only look out for people but for vehicles too was something I really had to get used to. After that though, the fun really started to kick in.

Due to the specialties of each class, the gameplay can get quite tactical. Having a decent number of each class in your squad is very beneficial to staying alive. Several times I'd be using the Recon class and be outsniped, only to have BazookaSamurai there to revive me as a Medic. (Halp! I needz healz! Priest plx!) This really made the gameplay more fun and kept things interesting.

Photobucket

BazookaSamurai in his Medic gear. Oh ho ho.

A quick side note about sniping that kind of bugged me. When you look through the scope, there is no movement. This makes it very, very easy to get head shots on people which seems like it could get really annoying if you have a bunch of snipers in the area. Fortunately though, sniper shots aren't always one shot kills, especially if the person you are shooting has a medic next to them. (I swear I shot that guy four times.)

Upon further playing of the demo I have found that sniping doesn't bother me as much as it did. I suppose I got lucky with those first couple of headshots cause I see now how the gravity effect and travel time of bullets makes it far more difficult to snipe, especially at farther distances. You can all stop complaining about my previous comment now. :P

Vehicles are another thing worth mentioning. These were incredibly fun once you learn how to control them and not kill yourself in the process. You can load up your squad in a tank and have each person on a different gun and simply wreck havoc on everything until you are blown to bits. There are also quads which can be used as mobile death machines as you run over enemy squad members. :D Airplanes are also available but I didn't use them after I crashed the first one. *cough*

There were quite a few little things I really liked about the game too. When you use a class, you gain experience at the end of each match for that specific class. You also get points for using vehicles. It seems like you can get more stuff related to each class as you rank them up, but I didn't level any class enough to find out. Like Call of Duty, you also gain ranks as you play. Right now, I'm a Private I, next rank is Private II and so on and so forth.

Pins and insignias are also available for accomplishing certain tasks in battle, such as getting five sniper kills or reviving a squad member five times. These were nice cause it gave you something extra to work for. Another thing I personally liked was the addition of dog tags. When you killed someone in game, you were able to get a dog tag from them which can be viewed in your stats later. It seemed like I only got these when I did a knife kill, so I'm not completely certain you can get it from using a gun. It was pretty satisfying looking back in your stats and seeing the names of the players you'd killed.

Photobucket

Yeah, it's kind of like that. D:

Final Impression

Overall, I was very pleased with the demo. The chaotic addition of vehicles, planes, explosions, and mobile death machines really made it feel like you were in the middle of a war and could die at any moment. Classes were a very nice addition making the gameplay more tactical instead of straight shoot 'em up. I'm definitely considering picking up this game when I get the chance. Whether or not it will have the power to beat down Call of Duty from my gaming shelf is a mystery until I play the full game, but it certainly was fun and I'll be picking it up in the future.

Pros

  • Gameplay is fun and exciting. The chaotic feel of the battlefield makes it feel like your part of the action at all times and really keeps you on your toes. It feels like your in the middle of a war, something I feel is kind of lacking from something like MW2.
  • Addition of classes brings a tactical edge to multiplayer. Having a balanced squad really helps you accomplish your goals and keeps you alive. Plus, when you die you get to start yelling for a ress, and everyone loves that. (Priest! Healz! Plx! Ress MEH! D:)
  • Vehicles are fun to use in game. Loading everyone up in a tank and wrecking havoc upon the enemy squad is very fun and makes working with your team all the better. Also, using quads to run over people is priceless.
  • Knife kills are very satisfying. Also results in getting a dog tag from whoever you killed from the looks of it.
  • Experience system for the classes is pretty spiffy. Looks like you unlock new guns, gear, and gadgets as you level each class.
  • Addition of Pins and Insignias gives you a little extra something to work for in the game.
  • Its fun. :D

Cons

  • Sniping does not provide a challenge. You simply aim and shoot which I see being a problem in the future.
  • Graphics look like they could be a bit better. They aren't bad by any means but they aren't as pretty as some other games.
  • Not really a con, but I'm curious what different game modes will be available for multiplayer. There seems to be only one mode available for the demo. :'<
  • Planes are evil and easily crashed. This is due to my own inablility to drive fly such a thing but still, they are evil. >:O

My biggest problem when I participated with the Beta was that even when I headshotted someone with my sniper rifle, it'd still take another 3 or 4 hits to kill the damn guy. It was a little bit frustrating to take the perfect shot only to have to do it multiple times over.

I dunno if they fixed that or not, but I hope so.

down2zero: I should have said helicopters, not planes, but still they are evil! :P

RyougaElliot: Yeah, I noticed that too. Sometimes a headshot would work fine and other times it wouldn't work at all. Very strange. As you said, I hope its something they fix.

  • Bullets have trajectory

Posted: Feb 07, 2010 12:00AM PST by  Machocruz

What you may think was a headshot might have actually hit the torso.  Bullets also have travel time, so you have to lead a moving target.

No need to defend your stance. How can you not be bored with CoD ?  I still have never gotten a good explanation about what is so great about it, compared to the dozens of FPS that have come before.

As far as console military shooters this gen, I think the game will have it all over MW.  Better gun feedback and sound, more methodical gameplay, less arcadey, larger maps, vehicles, environmental desruction, better physics.  Then again, I've always preferred the Battlefield series, and it looks like they're going to have a console version that lives up to the PC.

I hope the classic BF control point mode is included.  Rush is fine, but i like the back and forth over outposts better.

There are videos on Youtube of some of the other maps, sporting better graphics.  They will look fine, considering the scale and amount of physics and particles the engine is juggling.

But I gave up on the Battlefield series long ago after Battlefield 2 so don't expect to pick this title from me anytime soon especially since Medal Of Honor is coming out soon which I hope it will be nice!

I've been playing the demo a fair bit, and I'm really enjoying it so far. It can get pretty intense when there's a lot of people on the map, and there's crazy shit happening left and right. I played the medic class for the first time today and it was satisfying reviving some of my fallen comrades :)

This is a better review than you see on most sites, especially this one. Well done.

It's amazing to me the amount of military shooters that come out, grouped seemingly all at the same time, that feature similar gameplay. Obviously there is a market for all of them or we wouldn't see so many. Isn't there a new Medal of Honor on the horizon as well?

  • Had high hopes, but...

Posted: Feb 08, 2010 12:00AM PST by  bombtrak

...I wasn't impressed by the demo at all. Maybe since I've been playing so much MAG and am used to its particular flow as far as gameplay and control, I found BC2 to be clunky in those areas. While sprinting, the ability to strafe/move forward at same time is taken away? Ouch. Sometimes moving/sneaking through brush and trees, I'd get caught on objects like branches that it seemed like I should be able to move through or around.

I did, however, enjoy messing with the vehicles and the constant push forward as objectives were destroyed. And, I could see myself enjoying it more than MW2, which is about as much fun as running through a thorn bush in your skivvies.

I have an xbox, so I'm wondering if the PS3 has a different map than the snowy map that the 360 has. Also, does the mic work in the PS3 version? Becuase I could not talk to any of my teammates in the 3 games I played.

I also suck at flying the helicopter, it is so hard to fly. :(

Sniping does not provide a challenge. You simply aim and shoot which I see being a problem in the future.

Is this your first shooter? Cause that's what all fps's are. Aim and shoot. I'm just wondering how is it a problem when the formula for all the guns is aim and shoot.

Anyway, I tried the demo and it was fun. Certainly didnt do anything different for me seeing as I played lots of BF2 and this is what BBC2 is.

So bleh. Not going to buy it but it was fun.

  • The Reason for not getting headshots:

Posted: Feb 08, 2010 12:00AM PST by  Vetauciont

Is because B:BC2 takes in the effect of gravity. So if you are very far away, you have to aim a little above the head in order to get the headshot. So if the crosshair was on the head from a far away distance, the bullet will probably end up in the chest. Of course, the closer you get to the target, the less and less you have to aim above the target.

Resident_of_Rapture: I didn't have any problem with the mic while I was playing.

Connection_Lost: No, this is not my first shooter. What I was stating is that there isn't any movement at all while sniping. If you look at Call of Duty, there is a slight sway from your character moving while trying to snipe. It makes it a bit more challenging to simply shoot someone because you have to not only take into account their movement but your own as well. That's all I was trying to say.

Vetauciont: Yeah, I kind of noticed that when I was playing. I think it was on the loading screen that it started talking about the gravity factor which makes sense now that I wasn't getting head shots. :P

Everyone else: Thanks for reading! :]

  • BBC2 Sniping 101

Posted: Feb 08, 2010 12:00AM PST by  Commandolint

Ive been Playing all the Battlefield games for a long time. Sniping is a complete diff thing on here its not like in COD where its a straight shot bullet. Here bullets dont fly straight and true. You actually have to compensate for distance thats why the scope doesnt sway a la COD. Cause you can snipe from across the map but doesnt mean your bullet is landing on his head it could be landing on his upper torso or whatever. You have to have a good eye and patients as a sniper i can safely say im one of the few good snipers i went 53 and 5 one game its all about location and distant of the map.

p.s. In Battlefield 1943 pretty much any WW2 BF game you can fly planes.

  • Sniping in MW2 vs BFBC2

Posted: Feb 08, 2010 12:00AM PST by  chrisGTX

I think the sniping in BFBC 2 is more realistic than MW2's sniping. Yes, what everyone said about bullet trajectory and effects of gravity is true (another thing I actually like!) but there's one other thing. Real life snipers don't have their hands swaying back and forth like they do in MW2. Don't get me wrong I love holding my breath in MW2 to get that perfect shot, but I'm saying that a sniper's hands don't sway THAT MUCH! This may seem a small detail, but it just seems to take away from the polish of the game's realism.

Why is everyone so willing to jump on the Battlefield bandwagon. Yes, I played the demo and no doubt its an awesome game but MW2 (problems and all) is still the better shooter. Mind you, I think BC2 is brilliant, I played the demo for like 4 straight hours and will most likely buy it, but MW2 is still the better experience. Oh, and when your sniping you do have to lead a moving target from a distance or you aint hittin shit, which I think is cool...

Commandolint: Yeah, when you put it like that it could become challenging. I notice it the more I play the demo that the gravity definitely makes things a bit more difficult when getting a shot. Its not something I noticed (or even knew existed) when I played through the demo the first time. :P

MACtheVILLAIN: It is always going to fall to personal preference when it comes to comparing two different shooters, or any game for that matter. And about jumping on the bandwagon; couldn't the same be said of MW2? D: MW2 may be a better experience for some, but again, it breaks down into personal preference.

  • Couldn't Have Said it Better Myself!

    Posted: Feb 08, 2010 12:00AM PST by  Zaeed_Massani

Nice Review! You summed it all up pretty eloquently so i'll try to be brief.

I obsessed over the first modern warfare!  It was like crack.  But I always got so high-strung and frustrated form playing I finally quit.  I was initially very excited to play MW2 but when I finally tried it out I knew I didn't want to buy it.  The graphics were great, the gameplay was smooth, but the multiplayer made me crazy!  Even when I had a great round I got no satisfaction from it.  Sure it was polished, but was I having any fun?

I've been really sick so I downloaded Bad Company 2 on a whim, not knowing what to expect. What I got was a breath of fresh air.  The first thing that struck me was the scale of the battle.  So much was going on all around the battlefield and you could see, hear, and even feel all of it.  I've been playing that same map for two days and I haven't had the same experience twice.  And the tactical aspect is amazing!  Sometimes I can work with my squad in perfect harmony. Other times I feel like I carry my whole incompetent team on my back; and then occasionally the other team is way better than me and i get my ass handed to me for a whole match.  But every single time I feel like I'm making an important contribution to the battle and that's something COD can't match.

Bad Company 2 gives me so many memorable moments, like driving a quad into the enemy base, jumping off and watching it bowl over two enemies, and then mowing down three more with a shotgun before I place the charge and get out of dodge.  I haven't had so much fun playing a game since I was a little kid playing sega genesis.  And thats just the demo.

In regards to the sniper scope not moving, I thought it was kinda refreshing.  At first it felt old-school, but then I realized I had to factor in gravity and bullet travel time for moving targets. Also whenever I'm sniping and explosions go off near me my scope shakes all over the place! That felt extremely real to me.

Wow, so much for being brief. Maybe I shoulda written my own blog.  Haha wow I'm inspired to write my first-ever blog!  Maybe i'll finally get into this whole 'internet' fad.

  • Demo did its job.

Posted: Feb 08, 2010 12:00AM PST by  jediMASTERS

I think that the demo did exactly what is was meant to do. To garner interest in the game. I am a big MW2 fan and I enjoy the hell out of it.  It is definately not without its faults, which any level headed gamer would admit. There were some glithes at launch which have since been fixed and I fault IW for that. However, I refuse to blame them for the gamers' exploitation of the "noob tube" and camping.  That completely falls on the players, which unfortuneately has the ability to hamper my experience with the games from time to time. (I am one that feels that IW's ego got in their way a little bit with the whole no beta testing thing.  To put it bluntly it works.)

But the BBC2 has gained my undivided attention.  My first foray into the Battlefield franchise was actually this past summer's Battlefield 1943. I know I am a little late to the party but it is what it is.  That being said I have an idea of what to expect from BBC2.  And I expect something completely diiferent from MW2 despite the comsmetic similarities (modern FPS, etc). While MW2 is a more arcade, lone wolf experience BBC2 is all about the team tactics. It is something fresh after the countless days I have devoted to ranking up in MW2.

As mentioned above, small things like the difference in sniping creates a more varied experience (I do prefer sniping in BBC2). I also love how if your team is not in sync and unbalanced you will get owned.  You really cannot depend on that one teammate to get the 35 kills and all but guarantee a victory.  The majority of the team has to pulls his/her weight to insure success. The point is that BBC2 has a very different idea on what makes a good multiplayer experience.  I strongly feel that neither game is better than the other, just different.  That is a very positive thing. We as gamers get to have multiple choices.  I just do not comprehend the constant hating on either game by the opposing fanboys. Such a waste of time.

In the end, Dice's BBC2 has become highly anticipated if judged by the buzz going on throughout  the gaming community. I for one cannot wait to get my hands on the full version.

I found the sniping to be just the right challenge.  Arcing shots and leading a moving target, I found it was easier the more you did it, but admittadly I was terrible at first as this is the first time I've had to arc shots for sitting targets, it wasn't point and shoot.

Zaeed_Massani: Thank you for the in depth response. Glad to hear you enjoyed the demo as much as I did. :] You definitely should consider writing a blog!

jediMASTERS: Thank you as well for your response. As I stated in another reply, the more I play the demo the less things like sniping bother me. (I think I got lucky with those first couple of sniper shots and had high expectations. Hehe.) I'm really looking forward to picking up the full version of the game and glad to hear you've enjoyed the demo. :]

Malloc-X: Hey! I very much enjoy trying to drive planes! You should try it sometime! :P Ahh, I love my brain sometime. It tends to place words (and generally the wrong ones) where they don't belong.

jachael: The first couple of times I sniped it really felt like you just simply had to aim and shoot. There was no interference and it seemed ridiculously easy. As stated above, I think I got lucky with the first couple of shots cause the more I play the Recon class, the more I realize how all the various factors work against you. It really doesn't bother me as much anymore. :]

    Thanks to all for reading!

Nice lil overview Auxillium! Im with you.. MW2 is a great game.. better graphics.. tight-knit gameplay accuracy, and sometimes when it comes down to it.. a complete frag fest. Battlefield on the other hand has always been great about large scale maps and vehicles. I have played all the iterations on PC, and I think Ill have to check out this demo soon to get a better persective on this latest installment.

As long as there is a tomahawk with 2 players to fly in and gun.. I will be uber-happy! hahaha Nothing cooler than sweeping into control points and laying down the fire.. Cool

I tried this demo 2 nights ago and unfotunatly it didnt go very well.On my first try ever it seems that I spawned directly in front of a enemy tank. After about 3 and a half seconds and one bullet shot at that tank later I was dead.I was like um.....ok? lets try this again.Second time I spawned right beside a building and then about 2 seconds later the building exploded and again I was dead.I was like um..... ok? lets try this again. The third time I re spawned in a field right next to a big bush. There was another guy right beside me who wasnt shooting at me so I assumed he was on my team.He started to move so I said he seems to know what he's doing,I'll follow him. After about 15 seconds of life I was feeling pretty good.I'm thinking I'm going to go get revenge for my first two deaths, and then.........bang.....dead.I didnt see anything or hear anything. The fourth time I re spawned it was right beside another building that exploded about 4 seconds later. After that I was like WTF WTF WTF,screw this I'm going to go kill some dudes in MW2.So I'm playing MW,and I have my m4A1 fully loaded with my red dot sight and FMJ,stopping power pro etc.... and I see this guy who hasnt seen me yet,I aim and unload about three quarters of my clip into him and then he runs up and stabs me from 10 to 15 feet away. Now maybe you think that I suck at fps's,but that is not the case.I've prestiged 4 times already,I finished the single player campaign on veterain, and I have 46 stars on the special ops.I LOVE this game(MW) but I HATE the way people play it.To bad for me I guess.

Anyway after boring you silly after reading all this I think I will go give BF another try.Hopefuly it will go better this time.My goal is to survive for 20 seconds.LOL.

MW2's reason for sway was balance.  The ranges that you engage hostiles at in MW2 are really short, so bullet drop is not a factor, you can place your reticule on a target and the bullet will fly true.  If the sway was not included, MW2 would be dominated by snipers that could easily headshot everything they saw.

BC2 on the other hand uses the more realistic compensation of bullet drop due to gravity to hinder the ability's of it's sniper class.  In order to shoot a target in the head at range, you must place the center of your reticule ABOVE the intended target.  This accounts for the affect of gravity on the bullet in flight.  Also, those little dots, called mil-dots, on the sniper scope are used to compensate for this affect.  Each dot represents X number of inches of bullet drop over X number of yards to the target.  However, the ranges that can be effectively used for sniping in the BC2 demo are not long enough to (at maximum) even use the first mil-dot, so all of the compensation is trial and error.

At any rate, both systems are effective at balancing out the sniper's dominance of the modern battlefield because, after all, who wants to play a realistic game where you are dropped by a sniper that's a mile and a half away before you can even hear the sound from the shot being fired?

The last time I played a Battlefield was on the Xbox. I quite enjoyed it. Maybe someday I'll download the demo just for the memories. <33 But your review of it was quite helpful. I now know what to look out for. Kudo's to you, girl. :]
